Systems based on MOSIP to give identity to millions across the globe
04 SEP 2022

MOSIP was initiated at the International Institute of Information Technology- Bangalore (IIIT-B) with the vision to develop a non-proprietary platform on which foundational ID systems could be built. 5 years later, MOSIP (Modular Open Source Identity Platform) is a global project that has facilitated the issuance of unique digital IDs to over 71.1 million people across the globe. The project is funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Tata Trust, Omidyar Network, NORAD, and the Pratiksha Trust.

This piece by The Economic Times traces the journey of MOSIP's creation, and explores its unique flexibility and zero-knowledge architecture. The system is currently in different stages of adoption in the Philippines, Morocco, Sri Lanka, Togo, Guinea, and Ethiopia. MOSIP's principles of privacy and security by design, inclusivity, and accountability, are embedded in its code for a fair and ethical system of national identification.
