MOSIP is pleased to announce the signing of an MoU between the Latin American and Caribbean Council for Civil Registry, Identity and Vital Statistics (CLARCIEV) and International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIITB). This collaboration will facilitate the dissemination of MOSIP in CLARCIEV's member countries and work towards building a robust local ecosystem of digital identity infrastructure.
IIITB is deeply invested in the use of open-source technology for societal development. Derived from this focus, MOSIP was established in 2018, as a global digital public good.
MOSIP’s primary mission stems from one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals: to provide legal identity for all. With modular architecture, configurability, and privacy by design, MOSIP enables countries to build digital foundational ID systems customised to their specific needs.
Founded in 2005, CLARCIEV promotes the right to identity for all. The organisation brings together civil registry institutions and provides a space for sharing knowledge and good practices in the processes of legal registration and identification. They have created awareness among state governments, and in the general public, about the need to have modern and transparent civil registry institutions. CLARCIEV currently has 21 member countries, 18 of which are active.
Both parties will collaborate to create awareness about the advantages of a digital foundational identity among policy-makers, leaders, and public officials in the LAC region.
Speaking on the newly-forged partnership, Prof. S. Rajagopalan, President of MOSIP, said,

MOSIP (Modular Open-Source Identification Platform) was incubated at IIIT Bangalore as a global digital public good. The platform’s modular architecture, easy configuration, and customisation abilities, enables countries the flexibility to build their foundational digital ID systems in a cost-effective manner.
MOSIP was built on a strong bedrock of principles for security and privacy. The use of open standards and open-source code ensures that MOSIP is agnostic to specific applications, programming languages, and platforms, and actively works towards avoiding vendor lock-in.
Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates’ Foundation, Tata Trust, Omidyar Networks, NORAD, and Pratiksha Trust, the platform is being adopted by the Philippines, Morocco, and Togo, and piloted in Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and Guinea.

The Latin American and Caribbean Council of Civil Registry, Identity and Vital Statistics (CLARCIEV) emerged in 2005 as an organisation that brings together civil registry institutions, with the aim of providing a space for the exchange of experiences and good practices in the registration and identification of persons.
This regional organisation's mission is to promote access for all people to the right to identity, creating awareness both among States and the population about the need to have solid, modern, and transparent civil registry institutions. Currently, CLARCIEV has 21 member countries.
