MOSIP is pleased to announce the signing of an MoU between the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (RENIEC) and the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore (IIIT-B). This collaboration will mark the initiation of a pilot programme for safe, inclusive, and empowering digital ID in Peru.
The MOSIP pilot will aim to complete 500-1000 registrations, leveraging existing infrastructure and collaborating with local experts to examine the suitability of the MOSIP technology for Digital Public Infrastructure in Peru. Additionally, it will serve as a testing ground, with the ultimate goal of scaling up to a nationwide rollout.
IIIT-B and MOSIP support Peru in the development and implementation of a pilot that aligns with the principle of ownership over data and underlying technology, and will adhere to Peru’s national laws and globally-accepted best practices.
Speaking on the newly-forged partnership, Dr. Carmen Velarde Koechlin, Head of RENIEC, said:
“El trabajo conjunto que venimos realizando entre el Reniec y MOSIP contribuirá a la optimización de la gestión de la información del proceso de identificación de todos los ciudadanos y a seguir invirtiendo en la protección de sus datos personales. Muchas gracias por este gran aporte para el Perú y para todos los peruanos.”

MOSIP (Modular Open-Source Identification Platform) was incubated at IIIT Bangalore as a global digital public good. The platform’s modular architecture, easy configuration, and customisation abilities, enables countries the flexibility to build their foundational digital ID systems in a cost-effective manner.
MOSIP was built on a strong bedrock of principles for security and privacy. The use of open standards and open-source code ensures that MOSIP is agnostic to specific applications, programming languages, and platforms, and actively works towards avoiding vendor lock-in.
Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates’ Foundation, Tata Trust, NORAD, and Pratiksha Trust, the platform is being adopted by 17 countries in Asia Pacific, Africa, and Latin America.
IIIT-B is a premier educational institute, located in the heart of Electronic City, Bangalore, India. Focused on Post-Graduate IT education and research, it contains state-of-the-art infrastructure, world-class faculty, a vibrant alumni community, cutting-edge research facilities, and close industry collaborations.
